Barnett's fire sale

The State Government have handed down a budget that will plunge WA into a massive debt of $30.9 billion and a $1.3 billion deficit, for 2015/16.

The Liberal Government has pursued an aggressive privatisation agenda, planning to sell multiple public assets including the TAB and leasing the Fremantle Port.

United Voice WA Secretary Carolyn Smith has labelled the budget, “A fire sale.”

“Colin Barnett has sent a clear message to the people of Western Australia, everything must go,” she said.

“He’s prepared to sell off assets that have taken generations to acquire and he is going to sell it all off in a fire sale. Schools and Hospitals have been sneakily targeted too."

Ms Smith said the government was planning staff reductions for next year, even though WA has two new hospitals opening.

“You cannot open new hospitals without staff so we are, yet again, going to see empty hospitals or a lower level of patient care.

“Ripping $400 million out of the staffing budget over the next 4 years is either going to mean closing beds, closing wards or a lower level of care for WA patients.”

United Voice member and Education Assistant Terrie is worried about the state of Education in WA.

“The Barnett Government keeps moving the goalposts in education each time we think that we’re resourced, we have more changes and more money taken away,” She said.

Over $257 million will be cut from education in the next four years, as the government implements their workforce renewal program.
For our schools that means new Education Assistant positons will be cut by 40%.

“What this does is impact the most vulnerable resource we have and that’s our children’s education.

“Education is the key and they keep taking from that area.”
